A customer recently asked us this question so we turned it into a blog post, in case someone else wonders: Are Waxhead Sunscreens Vegan?
We actually have 3 vegan sunscreens, which we call our "everyday" or "facial" varieties:
These are all not water resistant, since they don't contain any beeswax, unlike our other sunscreens, which do contain certified organic beeswax and are water resistant (our Sport is extremely water resistant, FAR exceeding the FDA's max 80-minute rating, our Sport versions meet those water resistance standards for well over 5 HOURS, if not all day.)
We'd never recommend not reapplying after 2 hours in the sun or after swimming or surfing, but if you forget or get too busy, you'll be glad to have this on your skin.
The certified organic beeswax is actually the only reason ALL our sunscreens aren't technically vegan. (Our lip balm also contains superfine lanolin, what breastfeeding mothers use for relief, and this comes from sheep's wool, so our lip balm is also not vegan.)
To remove the beeswax would be to destroy the necessary water resistance, so we have no plans to do this, unless we come across a plant-based replacement that would work well within our formulations.
I hope this helps, and if you need any more info, just let us know at mac@gowaxhead.com.
