We've added certified organic cocoa powder to conceal the typically white appearance of zinc oxide. When used properly, zinc oxide sunscreen gives skin a visible hue.
Technically 3 years from purchase, but the useful life of our sunscreens has no practical limit, since our active ingredient zinc oxide is a mineral and does not lose its sunscreen capabilities over time, EVER. However, the FDA requires all sunscreen products to list a 3-year shelf life (mainly because petrochemical active ingredients in common sunscreens degrade quickly, even on the shelf). Regardless, if you ever feel a Waxhead product has spoiled, just let us know, and we'll send you a free replacement.
The answer depends on what areas you're covering. If face only, our sunscreen stick will deliver roughly 75-100 applications. If the entire body, about 20-30 applications.
Our prices represent a true cost to the world. We source our top-grade ingredients only from reputable, fair-trade, cruelty-free companies that are almost entirely US-based. We don’t purchase ingredients from countries with questionable labor or production practices. Learn more.
I really like this sunscreen. The color is natural for my medium skin tone, and the texture is not dry or greasy. Thank you.
I’ve used a lot of reef safe sunscreens and this is by far the best. I have not had any run so far when it gets wet, no more stinging the eyes! Very sticky, definitely has some staying power. I’ll rub and touch my face while surfing and after 2ish hours, this stuff still works even in the intense Hawaiian sun. Highly recommend!
One of my favorite things about this product is that it doesn't burn or sting eyes. The other kids in our party all ended up with bright red sunburn around their eyes, but because I could spread the waxhead sunscreen right up to the lash line, we had ZERO sunburn, and ZERO crying about sunscreen in kids' eyes.Another big plus is that it is very long-lasting. I didn't reapply it on my kids as often as I had intended to, but the sunscreen stayed put and did its job all day. We might not have been as lucky if the kids had been in and out of the water more frequently, so I still recommend reapplying every 80 minutes. The biggest issue with the tinted waxhead is that it gets everywhere, and requires some special treatment with dish soap before laundering. I was willing to spend the time stain treating all our swimwear and hats, but if you want to avoid that, buy the un-tinted kind. Finally, this stuff smells like chocolate silk frosting when you're spreading it on. Yum.
This product seems to work pretty well in keeping my face protectedI dab it on and then work it into my face which helps minimize the white castIt’s definitely not a perfect match in skin color but blends way better then the plain white mineral sunscreensThe smell is like coco so it’s pretty neutralI used it in Hawaii and will use it at home in California for everyday surf sessionsThis will be my go to sunscreen going forwardI like how it has minimal and safe ingredientsI only wish it was not so expensive
I have eczema and very sensitive, dry skin. I cannot tolerate a chemical sunblock and in the past have found most mineral products to be drying. Then I discovered moisturizing mineral sunblocks!!! I spend a lot of the day in the sun with my job, so protection is essential. I have tried many different sunblocks and though they worked I wanted to use a tinted product to avoid that ghostly look. Believe it or not, the Wax Head tinted Zinc Oxide sunscreen stick has been a miracle product for my face. It is difficult to spread, so is easier to use on a small surface area. Because it is tinted, I basically use it as foundation. It even covers my red rashes fairly well. It seals in moisture and protects my skin, which is very important for eczema. It also smells faintly of cocoa, which is awesome! For my neck, I use the Wax Head tinted mineral facial suncreen. It spreads more easily.
Waxhead uses modern holistic science and traditional ingredients to restore human’s healthy relationship with the sun.
Waxhead uses only superior quality, minimally processed ingredients. Our sunscreens contain only non-nano, uncoated, French process Zinc Oxide, 100% certified organic edible-grade inactive ingredients, and absolutely NO petrochemicals. Although the FDA recognizes many active and inactive ingredients for use in sunscreen, very few meet Waxhead’s elite standards.
Waxhead sunscreens provide true broad-spectrum coverage. Unlike common sunscreens containing petrochemicals or titanium dioxide, our zinc oxide formulas deliver the most effective protection across the entire UVA/UVB spectrum, defending the skin by absorbing and scattering UV radiation, protecting effectively against both sunburn and deep tissue damage.
Zinc oxide absorbs UV energy via bandgap absorption and reflects and scatters in the visible spectrum, preventing skin penetration and cell damage. The broadest spectrum UVA/UVB reflector that’s FDA-approved for sunscreen use, zinc oxide is also the only FDA-approved active ingredient for use on children under 6 months of age. Zinc oxide holds tight to its electrons when it absorbs UV energy, limiting the creation of free radicals that cause oxidative damage and increase the risk of skin cancer. We use non-nano, uncoated, French process Zinc Oxide as our sole active sunscreen ingredient, and all our sunscreens contain 25% - the most of any brand.

Coconut oil has been a skin softener for 1000s of years. Our certified organic extra virgin coconut oil is extracted from the meat of the coconut and is fairly traded and less processed than refined coconut oil. Due to its high content of saturated fatty acids, coconut oil is an excellent skin moisturizer, providing necessary hydration to keep skin nourished and help repair damaged skin cells.

Plus it has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective in the treatment of acne. We use only non-GMO, certified organic beeswax in our skincare products.

After cocoa butter has been extracted from the cacao bean, the remaining solids are ground into a fine cocoa powder that’s light to medium brown in color, which works perfectly as a tint. Cocoa is a rich substance, high in minerals and nutrients, including flavanols that decrease effects of UV rays and reduce skin roughness. Cocoa also enhances skin elasticity, density, and hydration, while stimulating blood flow. We use only fair-trade certified natural organic cocoa powder.

Thick and tough, our sunscreen takes a bit of effort to apply, but a little goes a long way, you can see exactly where you’re applying it, and once on, it delivers the safest, most effective, most eco-friendly sun defense available anywhere.
Slowly push up the product from the bottom of the tube, then press sunscreen in small dots and stripes onto sections of the face and body. (Retract product back into stick container by smacking bottom against a hard surface.)
Once applied, spread into an even layer across your skin.
Further rub into a thinner coverage, leaving a slight tinted hue that will deliver complete coverage. Our sunscreens will not fully absorb into the skin like petrochemical sunscreens.
Push it slowly up from bottom. If you push the stick too far out, tap container bottom firmly against a hard surface. Sunscreen will slide down back into the tub.
Use stick to directly dot sunscreen onto the skin (this will help warm up sunscreen too), then spread and rub into skin.
